Understanding the process

Vorax - UTR DuoTherm can process solid wastes of any class, based on an innovative technology that generates a temperature gradient produced by two thermal sources. It is a dry-distillation process that consists in heating the waste and resulting in three fractions of different physical states: solid, liquid and gaseous.

The equipment is compact and fully destroys the waste in an effective and safe way, without the need of additional fuel or auxiliary equipment. Inside the reactor, there are two thermal sources, the first at 900 °C and the second at 1600 °C, which form a temperature gradient and fully liquefy even iron or inert materials (sand).

This is an innovative equipment thanks to its solid-waste treatment process, which uses the fuel of the waste itself and fully disintegrates it, completely destroying infectious, pathological, and organochlorine materials and having - as a solid by-product - an inert and ceramic matrix (it does not produce ashes) with commercial application.

The gases formed in the process do not have dioxins or furans, and have a low volume. There is no ash formation in the solid by-product, since it derives from the material disintegration at high temperatures, and not from conventional combustion or gasification processes.

This process allows the extreme reduction of the quantity of gases exhausted, when compared to conventional processes. Besides, it does not allow the formation of dioxins or furans, considering the lack of oxygen and the high temperature. The gases formed inside the reactor are sucked and sharply cooled (quench) to then be treated and neutralized in an alkaline washer. State-of-the-art filters made of active carbon, activated alumina, potassium permanganate, and zeolite make sure that the emission levels obey the environmental standards.

For its operation, Vorax - UTR DuoTherm requires just an industrial 220-V or 380-V receptacle. The equipment can be operated continuously or intermittently, as required by the user. Its energy consumption is low and purely electric - one 2000-kg/day unit consumes an amount of energy equivalent to 5 electric showers (40 kW/hour), varying according to the waste category.

Vorax - UTR DuoTherm can be used on a level-surface environment and with a minimum of 4m of height. The reactor for hospital waste (industry, ships, ports, airports, etc.) requires a minimum training and has the state-of-the-art technology for treatment of solid waste. Its control is automatic, since the start until the cycle shutdown.

Benefits

Other procedures applied to a lesser extent, such as those of autoclaving and destruction by radiation (including those coming from microwave sources), as they do not reduce the volume of the disposable material, they are not considered appropriate to the waste final disposal.

This process if different from those previously mentioned, specially due to the following characteristics:

  • Does not process the waste in the excessive presence of air, considerably reducing the production of pollutants that need to be treated.

  • Does not produce cancerous molecules that need a lot of oxygen to be formed. The gases to be treated, that exist in small quantity, suffer a great thermal shock, preventing harmful molecules from coming back to life in the environment.

  • Does not form ashes, a toxic by-product that is always present in the conventional processes. The melting of particulate waste (like ash) in iron or ceramic matrices inhibits the formation of ashes and eliminates the need of using other disposal methods.

  • The process is fully automated, which makes the equipment operation very simple.

  • Vorax - UTR DuoTherm can provide a final disposal to wastes from any source, including hospital wastes, as the process makes all types of materials have virtually the same behavior: they disintegrate and then become liquid to finally become solid, forming a fully-inert and non-toxic material.
